Simulation of Episodic Winter Warming on Dehardening of Boreal Forest Seedlings in Northern Forest Nurseries

چکیده

In recent decades, forest nurseries in eastern Canada have been faced with periods of mild winter weather, delayed snowfall, and low seedling protective snow cover combined rains instead snowfall. These extreme conditions resulted the loss millions seedlings, particular those that overwinter outdoors, probably due to their dehardening. The main objective this study is simulate different warm weather at beginning end evaluate effects on dehardening growth Picea mariana glauca seedlings response freezing temperatures. Three warming treatments were simulated (control, 1 day, 3 days 10 °C) followed by three temperatures (−4, −12, −20 °C). winter, regardless treatment, two species tolerated without any apparent damage. However, absence cover, did not show frost tolerance °C. On other hand, showed normal after undergoing frosts −4 °C −12 °C, similar observed for control seedlings. Different cultural practices protection strategies are proposed improve reduce

The impact of boreal forest fire on climate warming.

We report measurements and analysis of a boreal forest fire, integrating the effects of greenhouse gases, aerosols, black carbon deposition on snow and sea ice, and postfire changes in surface albedo. The net effect of all agents was to increase radiative forcing during the first year (34 +/- 31 Watts per square meter of burned area), but to decrease radiative forcing when averaged over an 80-y...

Decomposition of recalcitrant carbon under experimental warming in boreal forest

Over the long term, soil carbon (C) storage is partly determined by decomposition rate of carbon that is slow to decompose (i.e., recalcitrant C). According to thermodynamic theory, decomposition rates of recalcitrant C might differ from those of non-recalcitrant C in their sensitivities to global warming. We decomposed leaf litter in a warming experiment in Alaskan boreal forest, and measured ...

Photosynthetic acclimation to warming in tropical forest tree seedlings

Tropical forests have a mitigating effect on man-made climate change by acting as a carbon sink. For that effect to continue, tropical trees will have to acclimate to rising temperatures, but it is currently unknown whether they have this capacity. We grew seedlings of three tropical tree species over a range of temperature regimes (TGrowth = 25, 30, 35 °C) and measured the temperature response...

Maintenance of the boreal-forest rainbelts during northern summer

It is not unreasonable to expect that boreal forests which exist along 60 o N in the Eurasian and North American continents were created and are maintained by warm seasonal rainfall. As revealed from satellite observations and various precipitation sources, zonally elongated rainbelts appear along these forests. Previous studies show that a relationship may exist between the frontal zone along ...

Forest fire effects on mercury deposition in the boreal forest.

Particulate Hg (pHg) is a component of smoke from biomass burning and has the potential for local redeposition. Throughfall (precipitation collected beneath a conifer or deciduous canopy) and open precipitation samples were collected pre- and postfire in 2005 and 2006 using passive precipitation collectors across the Superior National Forest, located in northern Minnesota, USA. Samples were col...
